The Tony's will give out three Special Awards this season
Last week, it was announced that the Tony Awards Administration will be presenting three Special Tony Awards this year. Out of the three awards, two will be given to specific shows and the final award will be going to an organization. The Special Tony Award goes to "outstanding productions, artists, and organizations that do not fall into any of the competitive categories,” (BroadwayNews).
Don't miss the Tony Awards this September!
The improv/hip-hop musical FREESTYLE LOVE SUPREME will be honored with a Special Tony Award, as will David Byrne's AMERICAN UTOPIA. The organization being honored is the Broadway Advocacy Coalition, who brought the issues of racism in the workplace to the forefront during the pandemic and faced the problems head on to create a more fair, equal work environment.
President of the American Theatre Wing, Heather Hitchens, and President of the Broadway League, Charlotte St. Martin, explain why they chose these three to honor:
“The Broadway Advocacy Coalition has provided an unparalleled platform for marginalized members of our theatre community and tools to help us all do better as we strive for equity. The two productions we are honoring, ‘David Byrne’s American Utopia’ and ‘Freestyle Love Supreme,’ take theatre to the next level, delivering outside-of-the-box presentations that have gone beyond the stage and brought theatre into the homes of millions of people around the world,” (BroadwayNews).
Make sure to tune into the Tony Awards this September to see these awards and more given out to amazing shows and members of the Broadway community!
